CONSTANT BATTLE: They are mostly due to the increasing number of smokers, says National Cancer Council president
KUALA LUMPUR: THE National Cancer Council (Makna) has revealed that
more than RM2 million had to be raised every month to provide treatment
for cancer patients.
Makna president Datuk Mohd Farid Ariffin said it was a constant battle
to raise funds and the number of cancer patients had increased over the
years.
"The rising cases are mostly contributed by smokers who are increasing as we speak," he told the New Straits Times.
"It is almost a losing battle as the cigarette companies are too tough to take on."
The National Cancer Registry recorded 17,763 cases in 2008, of which 9,936 were females.
Farid said reducing cancer cases and curing cancer was difficult when
one smokd or lived with a smoking family member and became a second-hand
smoker.
"Malaysians have also become careless about their eating habits and
adopted an unhealthy lifestyle which does not help to keep cancer at
bay."
He added that many were still unaware that though cancer treatment was expensive, the disease was curable.
"It is sad that awareness among the public on cancer is still low."
He said the council hoped to continue playing a role in helping patients fight their battle against cancer.
Makna also urged female Malaysians to use the free breast cancer
awareness application on smart phones known as LUDIc to detect breast
cancer at an earlier stage.
The public was also encouraged to use the toll free cancer helpline,
1-800-88-62562 or email cancerhelpline@makna.org.my for support.
